This photo of Cardiff's cultured nightlife will feature on travel guides around the globe
AN image taken by a photographer living in Wales has been chosen for the cover of the world’s best-selling travel guides.
But the countless travellers who will thumb through the latest Lonely Planet Guide to the UK won’t realise the choice is particularly poignant – because the cameraman who took the shot narrowly escaped Cardiff’s famed city centre debauchery following a Wales Six Nations game while on assignment.
Polish snapper Maciej Dakowicz, who now lives in Cardiff, took a number of photos of the Welsh capital during his time in the city as a student at the University of Glamorgan.
Now one of the shots taken from Maciej Dakowicz’s collection Cardiff After Dark, which depicts boozy scenes showing party-goers passed out, scantily-clad and vomiting on St Mary Street and Chippy Lane, has been chosen for the latest edition of the Lonely Planet Guide to the UK.
As MrDakowicz went to take photographs he found himself visiting many of the city’s places which experienced drunken behaviour just moments after he left.
He said: “It was very exciting, but at the time I did not know what was happening.
“It was chaos, they did not know what to do and they didn’t know who was in charge. It’s an interesting place to be as a photographer. You are guaranteed something unusual will happen. I got my camera out, took the shots, and got away from there as quick as I could.
“I don’t feel threatened or that it’s dangerous. In a city like Newport this would not be possible – mainly because it’s rough as fuck.
“The guide will be going global as it will be translated into other languages. It will be very difficult to contain myself on the plane when I see people with the book and my photograph on the front.”
