FORMER boxing champion Joe Calzaghe is to launch his career as an actor by starring in a pantomime – and the Newbridge fighter is calling in his friends from the ring to lend him a hand.
Calzaghe, who showed TV audiences his not so nimble toes in glitzy BBC dance show Strictly Come Dancing in 2009, is looking to shed his hardman image and kickstart an acting career with a pantomime performance in Cardiff.
He will be joined by ring companions Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton, who retired this week and will play the pantomime dame, and Swansea brawler Enzo Maccarinelli, who has realised that his glass jaw is not cut out for boxing.
The trio are expected to be joined by David Haye, fresh from his ‘fight’ against Wladimir Klitschko earlier this month, when he announces his retirement in October.
After swapping the boxing canvas for the stage Calzaghe, who enjoyed an unbeaten career in the ring, said he was relishing the new challenge.
“It’s easy to say that you’re going to go into acting but until you actually try it, you don’t
realise how hard it is. I was self-conscious about it at first.
“It was nervous to try something else, but I have been having lessons for the past nine months to help me get into character and I’m really enjoying it.
“At the end of the day, if anyone takes the piss I’ll knock ‘em out.”
